Eugene Peterson writes this about the Hebrew understanding of sabbath life:

The evening / morning sequence conditions us to the rhythms of grace. We go to sleep, and God begins his work.

As we sleep, he develops his covenant.

We wake and are called out to participate in God’s creative action.

We respond in faith, in work.

But always grace is previous. Grace is primary.

We wake into a world we didn’t make, into a salvation we didn’t earn.

With this reality in mind, we begin to see the goodness of the kingdom that is often small, ordinary, and easy to miss. We choose to practice the sabbath way of Jesus as we...

Stop.

Rest.

Delight.

Worship.

When we do, we become aware of God’s presence, and our weary souls come alive as we awaken to goodness.
