From January 19-20 we are calling the church community to join us in a Day of Prayer and Fasting in which we are seeking God's heart of healing for our community as well as his provision for our financial reality.

As part of this day, we invite you to help us cover an entire 24 hour period with prayer.  You can sign up for one (or more) half-hour time slots that you are committing to spending in prayer for our community here.

You are also invited to a Prayer Meeting at 7PM on January 20th where we will be gathering together at the church for a prayer meeting and to hear what God has been saying to us as a community.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is a spiritual practice where we choose to go without food for a specific period of time. There are three aspects of fasting: First of all it is a way that we can pray with our bodies, we bring all of us to God and focus our prayers. Secondly it reminds us of our dependency on God, like Jesus says in his temptation we don't live by bread alone and that he is the bread of life. Thirdly, it is a physical way to practice submission of our desires, we choose to not immediately gratify our good desire for food and in turn it helps us to grow self-control against disordered desires. While fasting we can take the time that we usually would to eat and instead pray, and we can allow our bodies groanings for food to draw us to pray. Fasting is not a way win God's love, we have that already, but instead a way to lean into that love and grow our union with Him.

We know that for some fasting from food is not a good choice (for example physical limitations or a difficult relationship with food) and so we invite you to choose to abstain from something else (perhaps screens, social media, music) during the time of the fast.

You can choose to fast for the whole period (7PM Monday to 7Pm Tuesday) or for a meal. For some, they will choose to only drink water or black coffee while they fast, while others may choose juice or soup broth. Its up to you on how you would like to engage with this fast.

What to Pray

As a way to help form our prayers, we gathering around three communal declarations that could be used to guide your engagement. For a brief explanation of the three sections and how to pray see below, or you can scroll to the bottom of the page to see a detailed guide that a couple of our Prayer Team Leaders have put together.

God is Faithful, We are Grateful

"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandment." Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV

During this time reflect on his faithfulness and how he has been at work in your life and in our community. Take time to examine yourself and ask where you can grow in faithfulness and confess these things to him. Then take time to respond in gratitude for what he has done, praising him for his faithfulness, and ask him to build gratitude in you in response to his faithfulness.

God is our Provider, We are Obedient

"So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide, and to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22:14 NIV

During this time look to all the ways that he has provided in the past, both in your life and in our community. Then ask where you are struggling to trust his provision, tell him about this and ask him to build trust in you. Take time praise him for his provision, and as him to help you to grow in obedience to his provision. Also during this time ask him to provide for our finances as a church.

God is Love, We are Love

"O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love." Psalm 59:17 NLT

During this time reflect on the ways that God has shown his love to both you and to our community. What ways do you struggle to recieve his love, you tell him about this and ask you to heal this in you. Thank him for his unfailing and loyal love, ask as him to transform you into a person of love to those around you. Pray for his healing love to also be at work in our church family and in our community as a whole.

Thank you for joining us in prayer! We appreciate you setting aside time in your day to spend time praying for our community. If you would like a quiet space to pray during the day on Tuesday you are more than welcome to come to the church and pray in the prayer corner.

We look forward to hearing the ways that God will speak during this time. Please share any reflections around your prayer time with Matt (matt@spaconline.com) or come join us for our Prayer Meeting on January 20 at 7PM.
